Albrecht had devoured his pizza and as he walked behind Vann into Redmilla’s, he made a mental note to thank Chander for his recommendation. As for Vann, he had demolished his enormous helping of pasta. The night had been a nice one thus far, and Albrecht was nervous about his unveiling to the people Vann cared so much for. He could not say why he was so apprehensive. How could they possibly have any interest in his face? While Albrecht was grateful to be free of the compound he’d called home for two millennia, sometimes life grew so complicated he yearned for his days sitting in a corner waiting for anything new to happen. Those types of thoughts irritated him more than any other. It was ridiculous to wish to be punished that way, and Albrecht wondered why his brain would have preferred it at any level.

“Hey, Vann,” Roman called out from the back of Redmilla’s where he sat with Drystan and Conley.

“I’ll grab the beers. You can go join them if you’d like,” Vann offered.

“I prefer to wait with you.” Vann gave him a wink and waved to Roman before ordering their drinks. The bear shifter who ran the place didn’t keep them standing there long, and soon they were weaving between patrons to the table of fallen knights.

“How was dinner?” Conley asked after they were seated.

“I enjoyed the pizza very much,” Albrecht replied.

“The pizza is the reason I recommended it to Alaric,” Drystan said.

“I didn’t realize you were the one who told Alaric about it. I’m glad you did—I plan to go again.”

Vann put a hand on Albrecht’s back, and it made his skin break out in goose bumps. He liked the effect the fallen knight had on him. “I hope I’m invited when you do.”

“Yes,” Albrecht mumbled.

“Hey, congratulations on getting your body back. I’m sure you were very relieved to appease your hunger among other things,” Conley offered.

“Thank you, there are many advantages,” Albrecht replied.

“You haven’t been by to update your photo,” Roman countered.

“Fallen knights are sticklers for rules, Apple,” Vann said. “No worries, he’ll come by this week. He was busy working on the bylaws.”

“Ugh, I’m glad that’s over,” Roman declared.

Drystan set down his beer after a healthy swallow. “Quit crying. It’ll all be worth it.”

“Tell them about the awesome mug I found for you, Apple.”

Albrecht told the fallen knights about the gift he’d received and saw them all smile when he relayed what the large cup had printed on it.

“You always did want a unicorn for a mate,” Roman remarked.

“Only because I knew how awesome it would be.”

“You know Albie, Vann didn’t even tell us you had red hair,” Conley confided.

“It’s not only red, but it has blond in it as well. My head could apparently not decide on a single hue, so it went with two.”

Conley chuckled. “Sounds kind of amazing actually.”

Albrecht closed his eyes for moment to gather his courage. “I could show you if you’d like.”

“Apple, if you prefer to stay under your cloak, that’s fine.
